HHS issued this final rule after hearing from communities that changes were needed to better protect patient confidentiality and prevent medical records from being used against people for providing or obtaining lawful reproductive health care. May 07 Health IT News : Policy & Medicine HHS ONC Issues Draft Federal Health IT Strategic Plan, Seeking Input The US Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) recently released the 2024 – 2030 Federal Health IT Strategic Plan draft , outlining the agency’s health IT strategy over the next several years. The plan includes a greater focus on artificial intelligence, public health, and health equity. In releasing the draft plan, ONC is seeking public comment no later than May 28, 2024. The 2024-2030 Plan attempts to build on the 2020-2025 Plan that emphasized a more modern health IT infrastructure and improved the access, exchange, and use of electronic health information. In the 2024-2030 Plan, ONC and more than 25 federal organizations addressed certain considerations and challenges to ensure the Plan remains relevant and effective in a constantly-evolving landscape. For example, the draft Plan identifies technological gaps and opportunities to modernize public health data systems, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. May 02 Health IT News : Modern Healthcare ONC chief: EHRs are central to AI’s role in healthcare Even as the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology celebrates its 20th birthday, the agency has little time these days to stop and smell the roses. ONC, which supports the adoption of health IT standards from providers and technology vendors, was created by an executive order from former President George W. Bush on April 27, 2004 to help jumpstart the adoption of electronic health records. Before ONC was formed, paper records and charts stored on-site were normal. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 codified ONC’s existence and the agency was central to the adoption of EHRs across the industry during the 2010s. In 2024, ONC is faced with a new set of challenges in helping enforce interoperability and regulate artificial intelligence . "Now we’re in the next phase, which is a much more expansive mission and set of activities," Micky Tripathi, ONC’s National Coordinator for Health Information Technology said in an interview. "How do you now use [medical data] in ways that help us move forward to benefit patients?"
